What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a special method of treatment for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions which uses physical exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques to restore health, improve pain, improve physical conditioning and increase functional working capacity for patients. You can expect for your Doctor of Physical Therapy to create a plan of treatment specific for you and your needs.

Who are Physical Therapists?

Physical therapy is provided by Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) . DPT’s are known as physiotherapists in many countries. Doctors of Physical Therapy are licensed health care professionals who may promote, maintain, or restore health through physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, patient education, physical intervention, rehabilitation, disease prevention and health promotion. In addition, DPTs work with individuals to develop fitness and wellness programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

How often do I need to attend physical therapy?

Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will examine you after the first visit and draw up specific treatment plan for you based on your conditions and diagnosis. Most treatment plans range from 4-16 weeks, 2-3 times per week. Others may be shorter or longer based on your specific needs.

How long will my physical therapy appointment be?

Appointments for physical therapy vary in length depending on your diagnosis and activity level. On average, a patient’s first visit lasts about 60-90 minutes. For the initial examination, we accept the documents, fill out the in-take form and examine the patient, then draw up a treatment plan. Follow up visits are between 45-60 minutes in length.

What should I wear for my first appointment?

We recommend that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that will allow us to expose the area which needs to be treated. You should wear something which you feel comfortable exercising in.

What should I expect at my first appointment?
  1. Upon your arrival we will do a temperature screening to fulfil CDC and NYPTA COVID prevention guidelines.
  2. You will be asked to fill in our Intake Form (please remember to bring your ID or Drivers License, as well as your Insurance Cards with you for the registration).
  3. Following, your DPT will perform an initial evaluation and discuss your plan of care. The Therapist uses this information to set goals for your continued treatment.
  4. At the end of the appointment, together we will schedule out your future visits plan and provide you with some instructions on what to do at home. In most cases this will include a Home Exercise Program to follow.
