Therapeutic Techniques

MANUAL THERAPY


Manual therapy is a hands-on, one-on-one approach with your physical therapist that includes joint mobilizations, manipulations, stretching, massage therapy, and passive movement of muscles and joints. Your therapist will guide you how to move against targetted resistance to improve muscle function. Manual therapy can also include lymph drainage, joint traction, and trigger point release therapy.

KINESIO-TAPING


Kinesiology taping is a therapeutic tool that has been used since the 1970’s for the prevention and treatment of sporting injuries. Kinesio-taping gained popularity in recent years for use for musculoskeletal sport-related conditions and for more widespread use in the clinic to treat a wide range of conditions.

CRYO- AND HEAT THERAPY


Physical Therapists routinely use both cryotherapy and heat therapy in the clinic to treat a wide range of conditions. These conditions range from acute tissue injuries, such as muscle and joint sprains, myofascial trigger point release, tendinitis, acute localized swelling after injuries, bursitis, and many more.

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) can be described as a skilled clinical intervention that includes the use of specialized tools to manipulate the skin, fascia, muscles, and tendons by specific compressive stroke techniques.

PARAFFIN WAX


Paraffin wax is a form of heat therapy. It is commonly used therapeutically to provide heat to increase blood flow, reduce stiffness, and alleviate pain and soreness. It is especially helpful in certain areas of the body, such as the small joints and muscles of the hands.

Your therapist will design a treatment plan to improve your ability to maintain equilibrium and balance.

LYMPH DRAINING


Lymph drainage is a therapeutic intervention done to treat lymphedema. This technique is a light, skin-stretching massage that promotes the movement of lymphatic fluid out of swollen areas and is unrelated to a traditional massage, which focuses more on muscles and other soft-tissues.
